The state capital of Alabama, Montgomery is a large city in Montgomery County. This modern city provides a multitude of ways for both residents and visitors to lead active lifestyles, including walking/biking trails in local parks, and tennis. The city also provides a wealth of golfing opportunities to gain more exercise by walking the cart path or just working on your full swing.
Layout
If you're looking for a relatively easy course to play, the Magnolia Golf Club will be your best bet. The course, located on Elsberry Road, is laid out on mainly flat terrain, making it an easy course to walk and get in some exercise. The 18 holes feature some tree-lined fairways and small undulating greens, as well.
Recognition
You may want to look for the Lagoon Park Golf Course, located on Lagoon Park Drive. This facility was named by Golf Digest as one of the best top 50 public courses to play in the nation, and was also named one of the best courses in the city by readers of the Montgomery Advertiser. The 6,773-yard Charles M. Graves-designed course draws the attention of several national and regional tournaments due to its recognition as a top course.
Rates
Montgomery's Gateway Executive Golf Course, located on Davenport Parkway, is one of the city's more affordable courses on which to play. As of September 2010, the nine-hole, Ken Morgan-designed layout has a $10 green fee on Tuesdays through Thursdays, while $16 will get you nine holes of golf plus the use of a cart. Weekends and holidays run a bit higher--$14 and $20. If you want to play a full 18 holes, the green fee will only run you $15.
Design
The creation of legendary golfer Byron Nelson and golfer Joe Finger, the Cottonwood Golf Club has gained attention for being one of the best designs in the South. The two golfers designed the 18-hole course with a traditional layout, adorning the holes with forgiving fairways and undulating greens. The trees lining the fairways can snag an errant shot, though. The five sets of tees result in a course ranging in yardage from 6,000 to 7,115 yards. The course's design is what also keeps golfers coming back; it has played host to many professional and collegiate events, including the Southeast Intercollegiate Championship, the SEC College Championships and Senior PGA tournaments.
Variety
If you are looking for variety in your golf game, the East Course at Tallapoosa Lakes Golf Course will provide you with just that. The 18-hole course features a handful of dogleg holes, holes lined with plenty of trees and greens that are well protected by bunkers. Tallapoosa's West Course also provides variety, as it features forgiving holes with wider fairways, a handful of water hazards and more receptive greens than the East.
