Vitamin D, also known as the "active vitamin D," is essential for calcium to be absorbed into the body, according to the National Institutes of Health. Vitamin D can absorbed in three ways: eating foods rich in vitamin D, skin absorption and supplementation. If you take vitamin D supplements, the NIH recommends 400 to 600 International Units daily. Incorporating foods, such as saltwater fish, liver, fortified milk and egg yolks, also provide your body with the needed vitamin D.
