Golf is a sport that depends on the strength and health of the shoulders, back, core and arm muscles. Making sure those muscles are in shape will go a long way toward helping you become a better golfer and avoid injuries throughout your round. Golfers can do exercises that strengthen those areas on a regular basis in order to stay active and avoid time away from the golf course.
Exercise Band Stretch
Use exercise bands to strengthen your shoulders and back. Do front chest stretches to increase upper body and arm strength. Start by holding the resistance band at shoulder level. Stretch the band until your arms are extended fully and hold the stretch for two seconds. Return to the starting position and repeat the stretch 15 times, take a 30-second break and repeat. Do the floor-to-ceiling stretch by placing one end of the exercise band under your feet and lifting the other end over your head. Do this 15 times, take a 30-second break and repeat.
Arm Curls on Exercise Ball
In order to enjoy pain-free golf, you need to take care of your lower back. This area provides much of your ability to come through the ball with club head speed at impact. When you are in pain, you can't do this on a consistent basis. Sit on an exercise ball and find your balance point. Take light weights in each hand -- 3 pounds -- and extend your arms so that your hands are just above floor level. Curl the weights up to shoulder height, then return to the starting position. Do this 15 times, take a 30-second break and then repeat the set.
Cardiovascular Exercise
Building stamina and endurance can help a golfer hold his correct form when swinging the club in the later stages of a round of golf. Hitting the ball the correct way and using the proper swing will help a golfer play his best game and avoid stressing and straining muscles with an improper swing. Build endurance by doing cardiovascular exercise for a minimum of 25 minutes at a time, three times per week. Running is an ideal cardiovascular exercise, but you can also ride a bike, walk or swim to get build stamina and endurance.
