Canes are an important tool for those who use them. Using a cane is not as simple as it might look. According to MayoClinic.com, a cane can be used to help balance while walking or to compensate for a weakness or injury. Learning proper technique is the only way that it can be a useful tool. The American Physical Therapy Association recommends seeing a professional, such as a physical therapist, to choose and size the right cane. The professional can also teach correct techniques for using it.
Using A Cane To Walk On Flat Floors
The cane should be held in the hand of the stronger side of the body. According to Drugs.com, the user should place the cane about four inches ahead of the stronger leg. Placing the body weight on the stronger side, step forward with the weaker leg. Next, use the cane to keep the weight off the weaker leg and move the stronger side forward. The American Physical Therapy Association states that a person using any type of cane is more likely to walk slowly. Care should be taken when ambulating with a cane.
Using A Cane To Negotiate Stairs
When negotiating stairs, the rule of thumb is up with the good, down with the bad. In other words lead with the stronger side when walking upstairs and lead with the weaker side when walking downstairs. Again, the cane should stay on the side of the stronger leg. As advised by Drugs.com, people using a cane should only use stairs when there is a support person alongside them.
Using A Cane To Get Into And Out Of A Chair
To sit down, begin with the back of the legs touching the seat. Drugs.com recommends beginning by reaching back and grabbing the arms of the chair. When ready to sit down, take all of your weight off of the weaker side and slowly lower yourself with the stronger leg. To get out of a chair, hold the cane with the stronger side's hand, says Drugs.com. Put both hands on the arms of the chair and use upper body strength to raise yourself out of the chair.
