At youth archery camps in California, your child will learn skills such as hand/eye coordination, concentration, focus, accuracy and the difference between recurve and compound archers. Your child will also create new friends, experiences and adventures. Whether you're located in Northern California, Central California or Southern California, archery camps and lessons are near you.
Non-Competitive Camps
Perhaps your child isn't interested in beating the next kid in a game of "who can shoot the most arrows on target." California has options for non-competitive archery camps. The Bar 717 Ranch at Camp Trinity opened its doors in 1930. It specializes in creating a learning environment that boosts self esteem and nurtures a child's development. For example, before the child's archery lesson, he makes his own target from arts and crafts. Camps in Descanso on Mount Oliver and in Clovis on Huntington Lake also offer this type of caring support.
Competitive Camps
Some children respond to an environment that provides them with a healthy dose of competition. In Bonsall, California on a horse ranch there just might be this type of camp for your child. Archery is chosen as an elective, target practice is held and there are weekly contests for accuracy. Only after your child has accomplished the prerequisite level of safety and shooting lessons, reviews, testings and technique pointers may he participate in these contests. Check that the camp has National Archery Association certified staff. This will ensure that you are getting the highest quality of training.
Private Lessons
If your child tries archery at camps and wants to continue honing his shooting technique, find lessons available near you. JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) provides lessons and competition to children ranging from 8 to 18 all over California by certified coaches. The youth's skill level in archery will determine the schedule of classes, how they are formatted and the classes will grow based on his development. Check out the archery pro shops for further information on local lessons.
Archery Safety
Parents might be concerned about the danger of archery at camps. Speak to the camp counselors. Be sure that the instructors are certified by the USA Archery Coach Certification Program. To get certified, the camp counselors only need to take an eight- to 12-hour course and pay a small fee for the course and materials. The certificate expires after three years.
Considerations
Archery lessons and activities are generally held within a camp where many other activities and classes are also taken. Designate the importance of archery as a component to your child's camp and this will determine which California camp works best for you. Archery camps are available in day camps, overnight camps, weekly and monthly camps. Another option outside of private lessons is CalNASP (California's National Archery in the Schools Program). CalNASP works with the Department of Fish and Game in conjunction with the Department of Education to offer after-school and in-school programs to children in grades 4 through 12.
