Stevia rebaudiana is an herb in the Chrysanthemum family that grows wild as a small shrub in parts of Paraguay and Brazil. Stevia is an all-natural herbal product with centuries of use. It has been thoroughly tested in dozens of tests around the world and found to be completely non-toxic, states David Richard, from his book "Stevia Rebaudiana: Nature's Sweet Secret." This sweetener is available as a liquid extract or in a powder form and does not spike insulin levels as sugar does. As opposed to other popular artificial sweeteners, stevia has no known negative side effects and is about 200 times sweeter than regular sugar.
Step 1
Replace sugar in most baking recipes with stevia as a substitute. In general instances, 1 tsp. of stevia is equal to 1 cup of sugar, as it is a potent sweetener. You will notice the sugar missing as far as quantity and bulk, so add 1 cup of a sweet juice, yogurt, apple sauce or simply water for every tsp. of stevia that you use in a recipe, suggests ReplaceSugar.com.
Step 2
Add 1/4 tsp. to 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt, then sprinkle cinnamon on top. This creates a tasty, decadent snack with no negative side effects that come with sweetened yogurts from the store.
Step 3
Whip up organic whipping cream and add 1/2 teaspoon of stevia powder to the mix. This provides a sweet and filling alternative to sugary ice creams or artificially processed whipped creams with preservatives. Keep the whip cream cool in the refrigerator overnight, then dab a dollop on top of a fresh berry smoothie for a delightful breakfast the next morning.
Step 4
Pinch a small amount of stevia powder into your daily tea and coffee beverages. Sugar is not nearly as sweet as stevia, so only use a minimal amount when flavoring your drinks.
