Ambien is a brand name prescription medication used to treat sleep difficulties. According to drug manufacturer Sanofi Aventis, it can be used to effectively treat insomnia for up to seven hours each night, and can be prescribed and taken as long as a doctor recommends. While short-term effects, which include next-day headaches, dizziness and general grogginess, are common, there are some long-term effects associated with Ambien use.
Dependency
Long-term use of Ambien can cause some level of dependency. Although studies show that if taken as prescribed, Ambien may treat insomnia effectively without gaining tolerance of the medication dose or dependence issues, Sanofi Aventis says there are risks associated with taking any form of sleep aid. Those who have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, or other medication dependency issues, are at a higher risk of becoming dependent on this medication.
Sleep Walking
According to the U.S. Federal Food and Drug Administration, there is a possibility of performing an activity while not fully awake and not being aware of said activity the following morning. This can include, but is not limited to, having sex, driving a car, eating, talking on the phone and sleep walking.
Abnormal Behavior
Another possible side effect is unusual thoughts and/or behaviors, according to the FDA. This can include, but is not limited to hallucinations, agitation, aggressiveness, depression and suicidal thoughts. There can also be symptoms of memory loss and anxiety from taking Ambien.
