Methamphetamine, an illegal drug, causes a temporary euphoric feeling and increases energy by stimulating dopamine levels in the human body. Also called meth, this drug is smoked, snorted or injected in the form of a clear powder. According to Scholastic.com, physicians may prescribe methamphetamine in small doses for the treatment of narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. That practice is rare, however, given the dangerous side effects it poses to users.
Dental Problems
Methamphetamine use affects the mouth in various ways. A condition called "meth mouth," is common in users and is characterized by broken, discolored and rotting teeth, according to PBS.org. Use of this drug dries out salivary glands, causing acids in the mouth to destroy tooth enamel. A reduction in enamel causes cavities. Additionally, NIDA for Teens reveals that meth addicts neglect hygiene of the mouth and tend to have bad eating habits; they also clench their jaws and grind their teeth as a result of use. Tooth loss is common in meth users.
Skin Problems
Meth users often develop skin irritation and sores. NIDA for Teens reveals that a common hallucination referred to as "crank bug" causes the feeling of insects crawling on or underneath the skin. Users claw at the skin, which leads to sores that easily become infected due to the decreased level of personal hygiene maintenance inherent to meth use. PBS.org points to acne as another common feature in meth users and indicates that meth damages tissues and blood vessels, which makes it more difficult for the body to heal.
Hyperthermia
According to Scholastic.com, methamphetamine use may lead to hyperthermia, or an increase in body temperature. This condition may, in rare cases, cause cardiovascular, kidney and liver damage. PBS.org says hyperthermia may be responsible for brain damage in meth users. Hyperthermia may also result in death in severe cases. Symptoms of hyperthermia include weakness, dizziness, flushed skin that feels hot and dry, headache, nausea, visual hallucinations and a rapid pulse rate that can be irregular or weak.
