Hypoglycemia is a medical condition characterized by low levels of glucose in the bloodstream, according to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." It is typically caused by excessive production of insulin, a chemical that controls blood glucose, by the pancreas. This condition can result in symptoms such as fatigue, fainting, vertigo and depression. Untreated hypoglycemia also can lead to coma and death. Dr. Balch and other alternative medical professionals believe that dietary choices might help combat the symptoms and effects of hypoglycemia.
Step 1
Eat up to 3 tbsp. of a food that contains soluble fiber, such as oat bran or flaxseed, before meals. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, soluble fiber helps regulate the conversion of food sugars into glucose and can keep blood glucose levels at consistent levels.
Step 2
Substitute white breads and pastas with whole-grain pastas and breads. White, refined flours can cause blood glucose levels to fluctuate quickly. Also, whole grains are abundant sources of B vitamins, which might help prevent decreases in blood sugar levels, according to Dr. Balch.
Step 3
Include lean proteins, such as lean beef, poultry fish, tofu and legumes, advises the University of Maryland Medical Center. Lean proteins might help support regulation of blood glucose levels, particularly when combined with complex carbohydrates and fats.
Step 4
Avoid or limit alcohol, advises Dr. Balch. Alcohol is quickly converted into sugars by the body, which can cause rapid blood glucose fluctuations.
Step 5
Follow an elimination strategy to identify and eliminate foods that might cause allergies, advises the University of Maryland Medical Center. Certain food allergies, such as those caused by wheat gluten, preservatives and dairy products, can impact the body's ability to regulate blood glucose. An elimination strategy involves removing a food for several weeks, then reintroducing the food to test for allergic reactions.
