Oral thrush, also known as candidiasis, occurs when the fungus candida albicans accumulates on the lining of the mouth. This results in creamy, white lesions on the tongue and inner cheeks. The lesions can be painful and, in severe cases, can bleed. Oral thrush can spread to the roof, gums, throat and other parts of the mouth. Anyone can be infected with oral thrush, but babies, people who wear dentures, people who use inhaled corticosteroids and those with compromised immune systems are more susceptible. If you catch oral thrush and prefer a natural approach to treatment, there are homeopathic remedies you can implement.
Step 1
Be vigilant about personal hygiene. Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water. Avoid touching your mouth or engaging in activities involving your mouth (e.g., kissing).
Step 2
Maintain good oral hygiene. Because oral thrush is an infection, you must take steps to eliminate the bacteria. Brush and floss twice daily. Replace your toothbrush weekly until the condition clears up to prevent reinfecting or spreading the bacteria in your mouth. Avoid using mouthwash and oral sprays because the alcohol content can alter the natural balance of good and bad bacteria in your mouth. Don't share toothbrushes, beverages or food.
Step 3
Use warm saltwater rinses two to three times per day. Make a saltwater rinse by combining 1 tsp. salt with 1 cup warm water. Swish the warm water around and spit it into a sink. Repeat until the water is gone.
Step 4
Eat natural yogurt. Yogurt contains active bacteria that can help to restore balance in the affected area. Avoid flavored yogurts to prevent further irritation. Incorporate yogurt into your diet as much as possible.
Step 5
Boost your immune system. Oral thrush is more likely to occur when a person's immune system is weakened. Take a multivitamin, get plenty of sleep, drink adequate water and eat fresh foods whenever possible to increase your intake of vitamins and minerals and to provide energy.
