How to Get Rid of Puffy Eyes & Bags

It's time to start your day, you look in the mirror and you see puffy eyes and bags. Puffy eyes and bags can be a result of fluid retention under the eyes, a lack of sleep, heredity, hormones, allergies and medication side effects. Fortunately you can get rid of puffy eyes and bags at home in a low cost and safe way.

Step 1

Get plenty of rest at night. According to the Mayo Clinic, seven to eight hours of sleep per night is the best time frame.

Step 2

Use an extra pillow to sleep at night to prevent fluid from collecting under your eyes. If you wake up with puffy eyes or bags prop your head up on a few pillows; the fluid along with your puffy eyes and bags should subside in two to six hours.

Step 3

Make a few dietary changes to get rid of puffy eyes and bags. Drink enough water to keep your body hydrated; your urine stream will run clear and less yellow when your body is hydrated. Water helps to flush the body of any toxins and prevent fluid retention under your eyes. Reduce your caffeine and sodium intake; both of these items increase water retention and can make your puffy eyes and bags worse.

Step 4

Use a cool compress to alleviate puffy eyes and bags in the morning. You can use a cool compress (ice cubes in a sandwich bag with a towel wrapped around the bag), cold cucumber slices, cold potato slices, a gel facial mask or damp tea bags. Sit upright, close your eyes and place the cool object over your puffy eyes or bags. After five to 10 minutes, remove the cool object and repeat if necessary.

Step 5

Make a witch hazel or rose water eye pad. Soak a cotton or wool pad in witch hazel or rose water. Sit upright, close your eyes and apply the pad for 15 to 20 minutes.
