Shampoo is a very useful product for keeping hair clean and shiny. Although shampoo is commonly used by almost all people in developed countries, a study led by M. Zirwas at the Ohio State University found that shampoo can also cause contact dermatitis and skin irritation. Certain ingredients are most likely to cause irritation, so reading labels is necessary to avoid such ingredients if you experience negative reactions to shampoo.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is found in almost every variety of shampoo, and it is also a common irritant to skin and eyes. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent that is extremely likely to cause skin irritation. Although reactions to the coconut-derived detergent are common, the government regards SLS as safe for use. Cocamidopropyl betaine is also derived from coconut and is a known irritant, according to the Ohio State study.

Parabens

Parabens are chemical preservatives found in many hair and body care products, including shampoo. Two varieties of parabens include methylparaben and propylparaben. According to the website Natural Skin Care Secrets, parabens are commonly used in skin care and hair products, and many people experience irritation resulting from their use.

Fragrance

Most shampoos contain fragrances to make the product smell more appealing, but these fragrances are also common causes of allergy and irritation. According to the website Our Little Place, fragrances themselves contain many irritating ingredients, including linalool, benzyl alcohol and ethyl acetate. These ingredients in large amounts may cause skin irritation and respiratory distress.
