Being placed on a potassium-restricted diet means you should your potassium intake carefully. Low potassium foods, or those containing less than 100mg of potassium per serving, should be eaten in place of potassium-rich foods, or those with over 200mg of potassium per serving. A doctor can refer patients to a nutritionist for food information, or they can use the USDA National Nutrient Database for a listing of foods and their potassium values.
Fruits
There are many fruits that are high in potassium, not so many that are low. They include ten small grapes with 93mg of potassium, one-half cup of mandarin oranges with 98mg, one-half cup of fresh blueberries with 63mg and one-half cup of sweet applesauce with 78mg. One 12g strawberry has 18mg of potassium, 1 raw apricot has 93mg and one cup of raw apples without the skin has 99mg.
Vegetables
Vegetables that have under 100mg of potassium per serving include one-half cup of frozen green beans with 85mg, one cup of iceberg lettuce with 87mg and one-half cup of cucumber slices with 88mg. 1 spear of raw broccoli has 98mg, 1 medium tomatillo has 91g, and one piece of canned hearts of palm has 58mg.
Dairy
There are some dairy foods with low potassium, including a 1-oz portion of American cheese with 79mg and a 1-oz. portion of cheddar cheese with 28mg.
Bread
A three-and-a-half-inch egg bagel has 48mg of potassium, one slice of wheat bread has 46mg, 1 slice of toasted rye or cracked wheat bread has 44mg, 1 corn muffin has 39mg and one slice of toasted oatmeal bread has 39mg.
Zero Potassium Foods
There are some foods that do not have any potassium in them per serving size. These include 1 piece of hard candy, 1 tbsp. of cornstarch, 1 tbsp. powdered sugar, 1tbsp. baking powder and 1 tbsp. reduced-calorie pancake syrup. Oils with no potassium per tbsp. serving size include olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil and corn oil.
