Salmon fishing is a great way to enjoy the wilds of Alaska as well as a very popular tourist activity. In order to enjoy a successful salmon fishing expedition, it is important to have the right gear. Equipment such as rods, reels, line, and leaders will be the most important to consider, while baits, lures, and hooks will be secondary. The type of equipment needed varies by salmon species, habitat, and the type of fishing you will be doing.

Saltwater Gear

Fishing for salmon in the Alaskan oceans requires that you take into consideration the corrosive effects that the salt water will have on your gear. Because of this, fishing rods and reels should be composed of a material that is resistant to corrosion such as aluminum, stainless steel, graphite or plastic. You will also need hooks and weights that are heavy enough to get the line down to the desired depth and bait that closely simulates common prey of oceanic salmon, most commonly small fish.

Freshwater Gear

Fishing for salmon in Alaska's many lakes and rivers requires a somewhat different set-up than oceanic fishing. Because you won't have to deal with the corrosive effects of saltwater, the material of your rod and reel matters much less, so choose whatever you are comfortable with. You will also need floats and live bait such as prawns or roe.

Rod Recommendations

In order to ensure a successful trip, it is important to select the right rod. Besides the material requirements already mentioned, it is important to choose a rod that is lightweight, flexible, and able to bear the weight of a 70-pound King Salmon. As far as length goes, 7 feet is the most commonly recommended for Alaskan salmon fishing.

Reel Recommendations

Spinning or bait-casting reels are most commonly used for salmon fishing in Alaska. Make sure that the reel has a smooth drag system to ensure that the proper amount of tension will be kept between fish and reel. A smooth drag system will also enable you to better concentrate on reeling in your fish.

Where to Buy

Fishing gear suitable for taking on Alaskan salmon is available online and at various fishing and sporting goods stores around the state of Alaska. If you are unsure about what equipment will be best for your Alaskan adventure, head into the nearest sporting goods store and ask. There are always salmon fishing experts willing to help.
