Children are required to sit in car seats and booster seats until they reach a certain height, weight or age in every state in the U.S. Most parents want their children to be as safe as possible. Britax is one of the car seat manufacturers that is known for its safety features.

Function

The main purpose for using Britax car seats is to keep your child safe. Britax has added side-impact safety features to lessen the chances that your child will get injured should you have an accident. Britax makes the best convertible car seats, according to the Consumer Search website. They say the Britax Roundabout performed very well in crash testing.

Types

Britax makes infant seats, convertible seats and booster seats. Some of their convertible seats can even be used for children up to 65 pounds, although the smallest of their infant car seats, the Roundabout, can only be used for those up to 40 pounds or 40 inches.

Ratings

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the Britax Frontier as one of the best bets for booster seats when it comes to safety. "Parents" magazine rates the Britax Boulevard 70 CS as one of the best convertible seats and the Britax Chaperone as one of the best infant car seats.

Considerations

Because the Britax seats are so highly engineered for safety and are crafted to be used with larger children, the seats tend to be quite large, according to Consumer Search. Those with small cars might not be able to fit them easily into their cars, so you should test one out in your car before purchasing it, if possible.

Expert Insight

Although the Britax seats are well liked by parents and do well in crash testing for safety, they can be a bit more difficult to use than some of the other seats available. The 2009 Child Safety Seat Ease of Use Ratings by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration rates most of the Britax seats a 3 out of 5 when used facing forward and a 2 out of 5 when used facing rear. These seats need to be used properly to be safe, so you should go to one of the stations set up by the government to check whether or not you have installed your car seat properly.
