Speed bags, the tear-drop shaped punching bags used for boxing and martial arts training, are durable and usually require little maintenance. However, if you are installing a new speed bag, or replacing an old bag or bag bladder, knowing how to attach the bag to the swivel that holds it will make the job go much faster. There are three different ways to attach the speed bag to the swivel: the S-hook, the chain link or the speed precision swivel.
S-Hook Installation
Step 1
Remove the old or damaged speed bag from the S-hook on the speed bag swivel, if necessary.
Step 2
Inflate the new or repaired speed bag to the correct pressure. Place the loop of the new or repaired speed bag onto the S-hook on the speed bag swivel.
Step 3
Wrap a length of duct tape around the S-hook to prevent the speed bag from coming of the hook, if desired.
Chain Link Installation
Step 1
Remove a standard link locking clip by inserting the ends of the retaining pin pliers into the link locking clip on the side of the bag attachment link. Squeeze the handles of the pliers to open and remove the clip. Set the link locking clip aside.
Step 2
Remove a sliding link locking clip by placing one of the pointed ends of a pair of needle-nose pliers on the inside of the bottom pin on the bag attachment link and the other point on one of the ends of the clip. Gently squeeze the pliers closed until the clip slides free from the pin. Pull the other end of the clip with the pliers to remove the clip. Set the link locking clip aside.
Step 3
Remove the open end link from the pins on the bag attachment link. Set the open end link aside. Remove the bag attachment link from the swivel head and the old or damaged speed bag.
Step 4
Inflate the new or repaired speed bag to the proper pressure. Insert one of the pins on the bag attachment link through the loop at the top of the speed bag. Insert the other pin on the bag attachment link through the hole in the swivel head so that the pin protrudes from the opposite side of the swivel head. Place the open end link onto the pins of the bag attachment link.
Step 5
Replace a standard link locking clip by spreading the clip with the retaining ring pliers. Place the clip onto the slots in the end of the pins on the bag attachment link. Release tension on the pliers and remove from the clip.
Step 6
Replace a sliding link locking clip by inserting the open end of the clip into the slot in the end of the bottom pin of the bag attachment link. Push the clip up, firmly, with a flat-head screwdriver until the open end of the clip snaps in place around the slot in the top pin of the bag attachment link.
Speed Precision Swivel Installation
Step 1
Release and remove the locking pin from the swivel base. Remove the bag attachment U-bolt from the swivel base. Remove the old or damaged speed bag from the U-bolt.
Step 2
Inflate the speed bag to the proper pressure. Insert the U-bolt into the loop on the new or repaired speed bag. Place the U-bolt on the swivel base. Align the holes in the U-bolt to the hole on the swivel base.
Step 3
Insert the locking pin through the U-bolt and swivel base. Lock the pin in place.
