Minnesota has a longstanding tradition of giving its veterans and war disabled due respect, which is obvious from the numerous tributes and statues, roads and bridges dedicated to honor veterans and the military in the state.

The Department of Veterans Affairs in Minnesota currently helps 410,000 veterans and their dependents to get the benefits and services provided by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

Fishing for Veterans

Fishing is one outdoor activity that is not limited to people of a particular age. However, what makes it especially appealing to military veterans, including those with physical disabilities, is that this is one sporting activity that lets them relax in the outdoors. The state of Minnesota is home to 10,000 lakes; many have resorts and campgrounds that offer veterans comfort and convenience. Some resorts have special rooms that are handicapped accessible.

Resorts Offering Fishing for Veterans

The Disabled Veterans Rest Camp welcomes all military personnel, reservists, and veterans of the National Guard. The camp has 18 cabins, a few of which are wheelchair accessible.

Offering a variety of recreational activities, the Veterans on the Lake Resort, is run by a nonprofit organization that caters to veterans and their families. They have handicapped-accessible piers providing plenty of fishing opportunity in addition to handicapped-accessible cabins.

Another resort that caters to veterans is the Cragan's Resort and Hotel on Gull Lake. The resort offers special discounts and fishing packages for veterans throughout the year. The cabins are handicapped accessible and offer lake views.

Amenities

All the resorts that cater to veterans in Minnesota are equipped to provide facilities and amenities to make the stay enjoyable and comfortable. The resorts have special cabins that have been designed for the physically disabled. Regular amenities at most of these resorts include, free wireless Internet access, in-room pay-per-view movies, and non-smoking and handicapped-accessible rooms, handicapped-accessible fishing piers, indoor pools and laundry service.

Activities for Veterans

Veterans can fish for bass at Big Marine Lake, indulge in canoeing or swimming, rent rowboats and paddle boats or simply relax over indoor board games. Some of the resorts have campfire pits and Finnish saunas.

Veterans and their families will not be lacking in things to do in and around Minnesota. The state has a rich collection of historic sites and museums for history and art enthusiasts. Other attractions include the Mall of America sports, which is an indoor theme park, the Underwater World, the Minnesota Zoo and Como Zoo, a Children's Museum, and the National Eagle Centre.
