Campgrounds in Pennsylvania Near Train Rides

With thousands of acres of beautiful countryside in Pennsylvania, there are many opportunities for active travelers. Train rides offer a different way to explore the area while experiencing a sense of history and learning something new. Plenty of camping options are available nearby for a healthy enjoyment of nature.

Family-Friendly

The Allentown KOA campground offers 40 acres for cabins, RV and tent-camping near the Wannamaker, Kempton & Southern Steam Railroad. Amenities include two playgrounds, a pool, fishing, bike rentals, mini golf, basketball and volleyball and a pet play area in a no-alcohol park setting. Free Wi-Fi and cable TV are also available. Take a hike at the campground or on the nearby Appalachian Trail. Day trips can be made from the KOA to Amish country, the Poconos, New York City or Philadelphia. Trolley trips are available in the area, as well as the steam train trips; the latter covers six miles of scenic countryside in about 40 minutes.

RV Resort

Near the Strasburg Railroad, Sun Valley Campground is located in Bowmansville. It has a central location to numerous attractions, such as Gettysburg, Valley Forge and Amish country. If you'd like to get in some golf, nearby in Stevens is the Foxchase Golf Club, the first solar-powered golf course in Pennsylvania. Tent sites, vacation rentals and cabins are available. The campground's amenities include a pool, laundry, showers, fishing, game room, basketball and volleyball, horseshoes, a playground and a general store.

Hiking

Blue Rocks Family Campground in Lenhartsville is located near the Reading & Northern Railroad. The campground originated in 1930 and is named after a glacier deposit of blue rocks that covers 15 of the campground's 125 acres. Amenities include a general store, gift shop and laundromat. Families can enjoy the kiddie pool and playground. Cabins are also available and RV sites may be requested. In a rustic and tree-filled area, you can enjoy swimming, volleyball and basketball, horseshoes and organized activities. There are many trails to explore with varying levels of difficulty, as well as the Appalachian Trail. The campground is surrounded by 1,000 acres of state game lands.

Water Enthusiasts

Whether you prefer to fish, kayak or canoe, Stony Fork Creek Campground offers plenty of water activities near the Tioga Central Railroad. Swimming is available in a pool, creek, lake or pond. Boat and pedal boats are available for rental and the campground has a stocked pond for fishing. There are 214 camping sites on 90 acres and the campground offers other outdoor activities such as volleyball, basketball, horseshoes and hiking, as well as a playground.

State Park

Frances Slocum State Park is located in Wyoming, just 15 miles from Scranton and the Steamtown National Historic Site, where you can enjoy train history and seasonal rides. With over 1,000 acres to explore and a 165-acre lake, the park offers you opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching, swimming, fishing, boating, picnicking and even hunting. Camping is available from April through late October. The park has 15 walk-in tent sites and 85 tent or trailer sites with some electric hookups. Flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station and a boat launch are provided.
