How to Iron on Tae Kwon Do Patches

Many tae kwon do schools require students to wear iron-on tae kwon do patches on their uniforms. These must be positioned in the correct places for the sake of tradition and propriety. The tae kwon do patches must also be secured correctly so they will not fall off while training.

Step 1

Heat up the iron. Set it on the cotton setting. This is setting 6 on most irons. Be sure to place the iron upright in a safe location while it is heating up.

Step 2

Position the tae kwon do patch in the correct spot on the uniform. Use a ruler to determine the location. Tae kwon do arm patches should be centered on the shoulder seam and one inch below it. Tae kwon do school patch should be on the left lapel 4 to 5 inches below the shoulder seam and 2 inches from the edge of the lapel.

Step 3

Iron the part of the uniform where the tae kwon do patch will be located. Make note of where the tae kwon do patch is positioned and remove it from the uniform temporarily. Run the iron across the uniform for about 30 seconds until the area where the tae kwon do patch will be is warm.

Step 4

Immediately place the shiny side of the tae kwon do patch face down on the warmed up part of the uniform. Check the position with a ruler again to make sure that it is in the right place. Press down on top of the tae kwon do patch with the iron for 30 seconds. Remove the iron while making sure not to move the patch in the process.

Step 5

Let the tae kwon do patch cool off for 10 minutes. Check to see if the seal is firm and that the patch does not move when nudged. If it is loose or any part of the tae kwon do patch is coming off of the uniform, you must start over.

Tips and Warnings

  • For a more secure hold, sew the tae kwon do patches on the uniform in addition to ironing them on.
