Helping Kids Understand the Dangers of Smoking

The cigarette smoking habit is one of the most insidious addictions in society. It is especially dangerous because there are some aspects that appeal to teenagers and children. There is a perceptions that smoking is "cool" and those who partake will be popular. Neither assertion is correct. Smoking leads to sickness, coughing cancer and a painful death.

Step 1

The inhalation of nicotine leads to cigarette addiction. Nicotine is found naturally in tobacco. It is colorless and tasteless but it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. It gets to the brain in as little as 10 seconds.

Step 2

Tar accumulates in the lungs shortly after one starts to smoke cigarettes. Specifically, the tar gets in the bronchial tubes and makes it difficult to breathe for many smokers.

Step 3

Carbon monoxide gets in your system as a result of smoking and it makes every organ work harder. Carbon monoxide is a poison gas and it taxes organs like the heart and lungs. They must work signficantly harder while the body is performing tasks like walking, running or exercise.

Step 4

Developing lung cancer is one of the likely long-term results in smoking. When lung cancer is discovered, it is often too late to save an individual because the cancer has spread (metastasized) through the rest of the body.

Step 5

Smokers can also develop heart disease as a result of the habit. The smoker's heart has had to work harder over the years and that makes it more prone to disease and weakness. An enlarged heart will not work as well or as long as a normal-sized heart and that leads to early death.

Tips and Warnings

  • Resist the urge to smoke no matter how cool you think it might be. You will likely live a longer and healthier life if you don't smoke.
