Gluten used to limit the types of foods that someone who suffers from allergies could eat. More and more restaurants today offer their customers gluten-free menus. Certain Italian restaurants now provide gluten-free pasta dishes, and many Chinese and Thai restaurants make a conscious effort to provide gluten-free options. Even some barbecue restaurants have added special gluten-free menus to their selections.

Blue Smoke

The Blue Smoke restaurant in New York City offers a large selection of different regional barbecue styles from across the country. Its gluten-free menu features appetizers such as iced oysters, deviled eggs and barbecued mussels. Healthy selections include salads, such as English pea and asparagus, and heirloom tomato and Vidalia onion. Main courses range from seafood, such as seared Atlantic Salmon and shrimp with organic grits, to American classics, such as filet mignon and New York strip steak. Highlighted barbecue dishes include Kansas City Spareribs, Texas salt and pepper beef ribs and applewood-smoked organic chicken. A modest selection of gluten-free desserts includes a vanilla bean ice cream sundae, chocolate or vanilla ice cream and a seasonal fruit plate.

Bacco Italian restaurant in San Francisco offers gluten-free pasta options. Be sure to special request gluten-free dishes. Pasta specialties at Bacco include fettuccine with tomato lamb sauce; Sardinian fregola with fresh clams, mussels, saffron and tomato; vermicelli with homemade Tuscan meatballs; and tagliolini with shrimp, tomatoes and arugola. Other pasta dishes featured on Bacco's dinner menu include rigatoni, ravioli, gnocchi and risotto. Bacco prepares its fresh pasta, breads and desserts daily, made with local and organic products when possible.

The Big Bowl Fresh Chinese and Thai restaurant in Chicago offers a full-range gluten-free menu. Appetizer choices include vegetable summer rolls and Thai chicken lettuce wraps. Entree options are served with jasmine rice.
