Broccoli sprouts are the freshly germinated seeds of the broccoli plant. According to Sprout People, broccoli sprouts have a spicy, peppery flavor, a slightly crunchy texture, and are among the healthiest of sprouts containing protein, vitamins, minerals and powerful antioxidants. Johns Hopkins University also indicates that broccoli sprouts contain phyto-nutrients that may help to reduce the risk of certain diseases, including some cancers. A small amount of broccoli seeds produces a large amount of sprouts, and with some simple items from your kitchen, you can sprout broccoli seeds at home to eat in about a week.
Step 1
Look through the broccoli seeds and remove any pebbles, twigs or other foreign matter. Rinse the seeds in warm water to wash off any dirt or dust.
Step 2
Place 2 tbsp. of broccoli seeds in the large glass jar. Add cool water, at 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, to the jar so that the seeds are completely covered with water. Stir the seeds gently with a spoon to wet the seeds thoroughly.
Step 3
Place a folded piece of cheese cloth over the top of the jar. Place a rubber band around the mouth of the jar to hold the cheese cloth in place. Soak the seeds in the water for 12 hours.
Step 4
Turn the jar over a sink to drain the water from the seeds after 12 hours. Shake the jar lightly to remove any excess water. Turn the jar back over and shake the seeds to the bottom of the jar. Place the seeds on your kitchen counter, out of direct sunlight, for 12 hours.
Step 5
Add water to the jar directly through the cheese cloth. Swirl the jar to rinse the seeds thoroughly. Pour the water out of the jar and shake the jar to remove any excess water. Shake the seeds to the bottom of the jar again and place the jar on the counter. Repeat this step, rinsing the seeds every morning and evening for the next four to five days.
Step 6
Place the seeds in direct sunlight to help them turn green on day six. Your broccoli sprouts are now ready to eat.
Step 7
Eat your broccoli sprouts alone with a little dressing or add them to salads, sandwiches, vegetable spreads or dips, or as a garnish on meats, soups or other dishes. Use broccoli sprouts in stir-fry dishes, or steam them with other vegetables or as an ingredient in vegetarian burgers.
