Fortunately, eating certain foods can usually help treat hypoglycemia. According to the American Diabetes Association, consuming foods that contain at least 15 to 20g of carbohydrate and are low in fat can help treat hypoglycemia quickly.
Milk
Milk contains approximately 12g of carbohydrate per serving. According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, drinking 1 cup of milk can help raise blood glucose if you become hypoglycemic.
Pretzels
Consuming 3/4 oz. of pretzels provides about 15g of carbohydrate according to the National Institutes of Health. Pretzels are easy to store and can be kept with you in case you suddenly become hypoglycemic.
Honey
The American Diabetes Association recommends consuming 1 tbsp. of honey or corn syrup to quickly raise blood sugar levels. This amount of honey provides about 15g of carbohydrate.
Hard Candies
According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, if your blood sugar drops below 70 gm/dL, consuming 5 or 6 pieces of hard candy can help raise blood glucose levels immediately.
Jelly or Jam
4 tbsp. of jelly or jam contain about 15g of carbohydrate according to the National Institutes of Health. Therefore consuming jellies or jams can help raise your blood sugar if you become hypoglycemic.
Fruit Juice
4 oz. or 1/2 cup of fruit juice or regular soda contains about 15g of carbohydrate according to the American Diabetes Association and is a good way to raise blood sugar levels quickly. However the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse notes that consuming diet soda will not have the same effect and isn't recommended for increasing blood sugar levels.
Raisins
Raisins contain about 15g of carbohydrate per 2 tbsp. serving according to the American Diabetes Association and can help quickly raise blood sugar levels when hypoglycemia occurs.
Crackers
Consuming four to five saltine crackers provides about 15g of carbohydrate and is a quick and easy way to treat hypoglycemia according to the American Diabetes Association.
