When you spend a lot of time in the water, swimming goggles are of great benefit, but only if they are fog-free. Swimming goggles protect your eyes from excessive contact with chlorine and provide a sealed pocket of air that is necessary for your eyes to see under water without suffering distortion. Most goggles are treated with an anti-fog product, but it wears off in one to six months, depending on usage. Without the anti-fog protection, your goggles will fog up due to the accumulation of moisture unless you take steps to prevent this.
Step 1
Treat the lenses of your goggles with a few drops of dishwashing liquid or shampoo. Rub the soap carefully around the lens with your finger and rinse the goggles thoroughly. Don't rub the lens, otherwise you'll rub off the film you just left on the lens. The soap will cause condensation to spread evenly across the lens, allowing you to see through the moisture as though nothing were there.
Step 2
Make it difficult for water vapor to condense into droplets on the lenses of your goggles. Spit into your goggles and rub the saliva around to coat the lens. Rinse the goggles in the pool water. According to the Naked Scientists, a science podcast, proteins in the saliva work in the same way as soap to keep your lenses looking clear.
Step 3
Reapply a commercial anti-fogging product to the lenses. Drops, cleaners and treated cloths will coat your lenses, preventing the accumulation of condensation. Allow the product to fully dry before using the goggles.
Step 4
Rinse your goggles in distilled water after you emerge from the pool to remove chlorine, copper and other contaminants from the lenses. Air-dry your goggles instead of rubbing the lenses; rubbing may remove any anti-fog treatment on the lenses.
