Learning how to play the golf is a challenge. You have to know how to address the ball, swing the club and hold it properly. Learning the proper grip is probably the first thing you should learn if you have a desire to become a serious golfer.
Step 1
Take hold of the club in your left hand. Hold it at the top of the grip. Place the small finger of your right hand in the gap between the middle finger and the forefinger of your left hand. Align both thumbs down the shaft of the club. This is called the overlapping grip and it is the most popular grip in the game today.
Step 2
Hold the club in your left hand. Slide it to the top of the grip. Take the small finger of your right hand and place it underneath the forefinger of your left hand. Put your thumbs down the shaft of the club. This is called the interlocking grip and it can help increase your power.
Step 3
Take hold of the club in your left hand and once again place it at the top of the shaft. Put your right hand directly underneath your left hand as if you were holding a baseball bat. There is no overlapping or interlocking of the fingers. This is called the baseball grip.
Step 4
Grip the club with moderate strength, as if you were shaking hands firmly with someone you just met. You want to grip the club at about a "5" on a scale of 1 to 10. Any tighter than that and it will be difficult to get a good swing. Any looser than that and the club will wobble on contact.
Step 5
Go to the driving range and hit 10 balls with each swing. You need to figure out which swing is best for you. Over time, most golfers will go with the overlapping grip, but that does not have to be a hard and fast rule for everyone.
Tips and Warnings
- Once you get comfortable with your grip, remember to take a smooth and rhythmic swing. Do not try to kill the ball.
