Building a smooth and reasonably paced swing is the ideal strategy for the low- and medium-handicap golfer who is trying to gain consistency from the tee and the fairway. However, once the golfer has learned the fundamentals of the game, there may come a time when he wants to swing with more speed in order to gain more power and distance.
Step 1
Tee up five balls when you are at the practice tee. The balls should be about three inches apart from the one next to it. Address the ball closest to you and hit it. Set up as quickly as possible and hit the second ball, while maintaining the proper form for your swing. Keep going until you have hit all five balls in rapid succession. Do this drill two more times, and your will build additional swing speed.
Step 2
Buy some swing weights and have them attached to your club for a session at the driving range. Swinging a club that is heavier than your normal club will help you swing the club faster when you are on the tee or the fairway.
Step 3
Begin your swing normally by rotating your hips to the right so that you have a full backswing. When you bring the club down, make a concious effort to swing the club as hard as your can but do not hit the ball. You are going to come down hard on your downswing but you will stop before you make impact. This is a drill that calls for stregnth and discipline. Do this 10 times, take a 30-second break and do it again. This sudden stop will help you add more speed and get more distance on your shots.
Step 4
Concentrate on rotating your hips fully when you want to increase your swing speed and generat more power. The hips are the focal point of the swing. As you have reached the top of your backswing, rotate your hips to the left with speed and purpose. Your hands will follow at a similar speed and help you generate more power.
Step 5
Concentrate on rotating your hips fully when you want to increase your swing speed and generat more power. The hips are the focal point of the swing. As you have reached the top of your backswing, rotate your hips to the left with speed and purpose. Your hands will follow at a similar speed and help you generate more power.
Tips and Warnings
- Go to the driving range and work on your swing at least 3 to 4 times per week.
