Leisure Activities for Adults With Autism in Illinois

Autism syndrome is "the presence of markedly abnormal or impaired development in social interaction and communication and a markedly restricted repertoire of activity and interests," according to the American Psychiatric Association. Because autistics are socially isolated, social activities are important as an attempt to boost their psychological health by engaging them in the community.

Social Interaction

There are numerous organizations in Illinois that offer support for those suffering from autism and Asperger's syndrome, a milder variation. The Chicago Autism SPectrum Adult (and teen) Network is an active organization that supports sufferers. CASPAN is an autism social group for adults18 and over and teens 13 and over. Many events are staged every month in locations around Chicago. Social opportunities include watching movies and DVDs, picnics, bowling, board games, card games and general meet-ups.

Camping

For autistic people of all ages, there are multiple opportunities to take a break away from home and go camping in the Illinois area. Some of these opportunities are provided for by Autism Community Connection, which prides itself on being a particularly large Illinois-based autism group and in working together to overcome the problems faced by sufferers.

Sports

Autism sufferers can literally become part of a team through sports activities. Team activities can help tackle the problem of the isolated autistic who is imprisoned within her own never-ending thoughts and feelings. They are geared toward improving the psychosocial health of autistic people and to encourage them to live as normal a life as possible.

Fundraising

Another way for Illinois autistics to meet up and make connections is through fundraising. The Organization for Autism Research raises money for autism from many sources, including donations from other autism groups and fundraisers such as Run for Autism. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is one of OAR's two biggest events of the year.

General Support

The Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership offers support to adults who are Asperger's or autistism sufferers. This consists of assistance in dealing with the likes of professors and employers. An intermediary deals with them on behalf of the Asperger's or autistism sufferer.
