Perfect a golf swing? That's probably not possible. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods all have come close, but none of them ever perfected their swing. However, it is possible to eliminate mistakes and build a precise and repeatable swing that allows you to hit accurate shots most of the time.
Step 1
Start off by taking the proper grip on your club. You need to take hold of the club in your left hand and move it up to the top of the shaft. Take the small finger of your right hand and put it in the space between the forefinger and the middle finger of your right hand. Have your thumbs align down the shaft of the club. Grip the club firmly, as if you were shaking hands with someone for the first time. Call it a "5" on a scale of 1 to 10.
Step 2
Bend your knees in an athletic position when you address the ball. Play the ball midway between your front and back legs. If you are using a driver or are using a fairway wood, play the ball about 1-to-2 ball lengths closer to your front foot. This will help you get the ball in the air and make solid contact.
Step 3
Rotate your hips to the right to get your swing started. You do not want to use your arms to lead your swing. This will cause problems at impact. Your hips need to turn fully and then when you have reached the top of your swing, rotate them back to the left. Your arms and legs will follow and you will have plenty of momentum to complete an excellent golf swing.
Step 4
Do not allow your head to move while you are in the process of swinging. You should be focused on the back and center portion of the ball because this is where you want to make your club impact the ball. The longer you keep your head in place and on the target, the more likely you are to hit the ball squarely and have an excellent swing.
Step 5
Go to the driving range regularly to build a solid and repeatable swing. You should try to hit at least 300 practice balls per week if your goal is a "perfect" swing. Don't just mash away trying to hit the ball as far as you can. Think about the fundamentals and make each swing count.
Tips and Warnings
- Think about the shot at hand. Don't worry about your last shot or think about the putt that you will have on the green. Stay in the moment.
