Overview
There is a huge market for selling used golf balls. Many medium- and high-handicap players prefer used golf balls because they tend to hit their shots off course and lose them. Why should they spend good money on expensive, new golf balls if they are going to end up in the woods or the water. If you are industrious and can locate used golf balls, you can sell them.
Step 1
Go to a local municipal golf course and talk to the course manager about going to the course's water hazards about fishing out golf balls at night and during the course's off-hours. You will need a ball retriever attached to a rope that you can cast 10, 15 or 20 feet. Tell the course manager that you are willing to give the couse a percentage of what you sell. Since you will be doing this when the course is closed, the course may look at it as easy money and give you access.
Step 2
In 2 to 3 hours, you should be able to come up with 500 balls or more. Finding the balls is not difficult, but getting them into decent shape requires time and effort. You will need to clean nearly every ball you can. Once you clean them, you can separate them into your "A" golf balls, "B" golf balls and "C" golf balls. The "A" balls are name brand golf balls in top shape, the "B" are in good shape and may be off brands and "C" balls are shag balls for practice only.
Step 3
Go to your local driving range. If you have acquired a signficant amount of golf balls -- usually in groups of 250 or 500 -- driving ranges will almost certainly buy them as long as they are in decent shape. They will want your "B" and "C" balls.
Step 4
Go to a local pro shop and show them your "A" golf balls. Offer them a chance to buy them at 50 cents per ball. This will give you an opportunity to make $100 on a group of 200 golf balls that you may have acquired in an hour of work.
Step 5
Log on to eBay because they have a signficant market for golf balls. Usually, golfers and golf clubs will buy golf balls in lots of 250 or 500 balls. If you have separated your golf balls by the condition they are in and the brands that you have acquired, you can make signficiant money in a relatively short period of time.
Tips and Warnings
- Make sure you give the golf course their cut after you have gotten your money or you will not be welcomed back.
- Going on to a golf course without permission is trespassing and you can be arrested. Engaging in golf-ball retrieval in southern states like Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi offers another hazard. You could come face-to-face with large and dangerous alligators.
