Overview
Golf grips can get worn down quickly if your play more than three rounds a week and you are doing it in extremely hot or cold weather. Hot weather and your perspiration will break down your grips rather easily, while golfing in cold-weather conditions will cause your grips to get stiff and possibly crack. You should know how to take grips off so the installation process can begin.
Step 1
Take your golf club and cut several slits down the length of your grips with your knife. The slits should be at least four inches long so you can reach underneath and forcefully pull the old grip off. Usually, four 4-inch cuts will be sufficient.
Step 2
Pop off the cap at the top of the shaft after you have pulled off the grip. Apply pressure with both thumbs in order to remove the cap. Twist off the grip stop so it slips to the bottom of the shaft.
Step 3
Peel off the grip tape that was used to attach the grip to the shaft. This should peel right off but it will leave some residue of glue and dirt on the shaft of the club.
Step 4
Use your grip solvent to clean the shaft of the club. The solvent will break down the old glue residue and also get off the pieces of hardened dirt that had been lodged under the grip.
Step 5
Take a warm, wet rag and clean off the grip solvent. You need to clean all the solvent off thoroughly, but don't use anything other than water for this task. After your have gotten all the solvent off, use a dry rag to make sure the shafts are prepared for the installation of the new grip.
