Fishing is a recreational activity for most and a competitive sport for others. However, many of those who fish recreationally take it seriously and want to enjoy their experience by being successful in their endeavor. While it may be enjoyable to be outside on a beautiful morning while fishing with friends or loved ones, it is a much more satisfying experience when the fish are plentiful and the fisherman is pulling them off the line with regularity.
Step 1
Make sure you have all the fishing gear you need prepared and ready to go the night before you go fishing. For the worm angler, that means the fishing rod, line, lures, weights, retractors and anything else you like to take with you in your tackle box before you go fishing. You don't want to spend the morning looking for your fishing gear and get off to a late start.
Step 2
Stop off at your local bait store and get your supply of worms. The best and most successful worms for fishing are called night crawlers. They are thick and lively when placed on the hook and are usually three to five inches long.
Step 3
Use a gang hook when worm fishing. A gang hook is really a double hook and it helps make the worm appear more realistic to the fish. Anyone can fish by placing the night crawler on a single hook and making sure it is secure, but when the worm is wrapped around that hook it does not appear natural. By placing one end of the worm on one end of the gang hook and the other end on the second hook, you have given the fish something realistic to go after.
Step 4
Place the gang hook on a barrel swivel when fishing in a river. Worm fishing is most effective on a flowing river and the barrel swivel allows water to flow right through it, giving your bait a realistic appearance to the fish.
Step 5
Keep your worms in a bait bag. You don't want to go searching for your bait when you are fishing from your boat or your spot on the shore. The easiest and most efficient way to store your worms is in a bait bag. Most fishermen move around during the process and don't stay in one spot. That's why a bait bag works out so well.
Tips and Warnings
- Use a gang hook (double-sided) when fishing with worms.
- Keep the hooks away from small children and inexperience anglers
