A study conducted at Penn State University showed that dieters who ate a bowl of soup before each meal consumed 100 fewer calories than their non-soup-eating counterparts. However, several diets have soup as the appetizer and the main course. Soup diets have been around for decades as fad diets that spur quick weight losses and--once discontinued--weight gains. Fad diets are not usually recommended by health care providers, but for a few days, they may jump start your weight loss and give you some motivation to continue on a less restrictive plan.

Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet has dieters consuming large quantities of a soup made from a variety of vegetables, vegetable juice and Lipton soup mix together with a specific mix of foods over a seven-day period. Day one requires eating only fruit plus the soup, day two features fresh vegetables plus the soup, day three mixes fruits and vegetables plus the soup, day four introduces skim milk and bananas, day five has beef and tomatoes with the soup, day six mixes beef and vegetables and the soup, and day seven requires brown rice, vegetables and fruit juices with the soup.

Chicken Soup Diet

The Chicken Soup Diet is a popular and easy diet to follow. Dieters make a large pot of soup with chicken breast, parsnips, chicken broth and a plethora of other vegetables. The day begins with a choice of healthy breakfast such as yogurt, fruit and wheat germ. That meal is followed by consuming the chicken soup for the rest of the day.

The Amazing Soup Diet

The Amazing Soup Diet is another seven-day eating plan that has soup at its base. A basic soup made from vegetables, including spinach, cabbage, carrots, green beans and chicken broth. Each day of the plan, dieters eat a low-fat, high-fiber breakfast and lunch and then mix other ingredients with the soup for dinner. The plan also allows dieters to eat as much of the soup in between meals as well as two 100-calorie treats per week.
