There's so much focus on preventing and reducing the amount of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth that the jaw line is often neglected during anti-aging regimens. Unfortunately, the aging process is unavoidable; however, there are ways to prevent premature aging of the jaw line and it's never too late to start the prevention process.
Step 1
Exfoliate your skin with a facial scrub two to three times per week to remove dead surface skin. An over-the-counter microdermabrasion kit can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your skin, or you can make an appointment with a dermatologist for a professional microdermabrasion, which will have more noticeable results.
Step 2
Apply sunblock with a minimum SPF 30 several times per day. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, or AAD, photoaging is aging caused by sun exposure and is the main culprit of premature wrinkles of the skin. The sun damages the skin by attacking elastin causing the skin to become loose and wrinkled, according to the AAD.
Step 3
Wear a large-billed hat to keep the sun's harmful UV rays from reaching your jawline. Protective clothing in combination with sunblock is the best protection you have against photoaging.
Step 4
Sleep on your back. Pressing your face into a pillow over several years causes wrinkles and lines to be permanently etched into your face. This is caused by the reduced production of elastins in your skin.
Step 5
Quit smoking. According to MayoClinic.com, the blood supply change to your skin caused by smoking could be the reason smoking increases skin wrinkles. In addition, the continuous puckering facial expression will cause lines and wrinkles to develop around the mouth similar to the way smile lines appear around the eyes.
Step 6
Get Botox injections. Botox is botulinum A toxin that temporarily paralyzes your facial muscles. This paralysis will prevent some new wrinkles from emerging since you will be unable to make as dramatic of facial line creases with facial expressions.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. because harmful UV rays are at their strongest during these times. Before getting Botox, prepare a list of all your medications and medical history to avoid any problems. Avoid deliberately tanning indoors and outdoors.
- Contact your doctor immediately if you experience difficulties swallowing, speaking or breathing after a Botox injection. According to Botox Cosmetics, these symptoms are potentially life threatening and typically occurs within hours or weeks of the injection.
