EtoGesic, generic name etodolac, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, used to treat symptoms of arthritis in dogs. According to Drugs.com, it must be prescribed by a veterinarian and is not approved for use in humans. It is to be used for dogs only. It is prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, which can affect older dogs. It is supplied as a tablet and is administered orally with food. There are some side effects associated with its use.
Gastrointestinal Bleeding
EtoGesic, an NSAID, can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and stomach ulcers. EtoGesic works by inhibiting the formation of prostaglandins, which are responsible for initiating the inflammatory response of the body. According to Elmhurst College Virtual Chembook, another function of prostaglandins is to aid in blood clot formation, so taking EtoGesic can increase the occurrence of GI bleeds and stomach ulcers. EtoGesic should not be given along with aspirin products. Any sign of black, tarry stools or pale gums should be reported to the vet immediately.
Vomiting and Diarrhea
According to PetPlace.com, two of the most common side effects of EtoGesic are vomiting and diarrhea. Because there is some difficulty in dosing smaller dogs, EtoGesic should only be given to dogs weighing more than 10 lbs. EtoGesic is not recommended for dog younger than 12 months.
Liver or Kidney Failure
In some dogs, EtoGesic can cause serious problems with the liver or kidneys. According to VeterinaryPartner.com, elderly dogs with decreased kidney function may not be able to tolerate EtoGesic well, and it can cause kidney failure in some. A very rare side effect is liver toxicity, called hepatotoxicity. Hepatotoxicity typically occurs within the first three weeks of treatment. Symptoms of hepatotoxicity include loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes and elevated liver enzymes. The veterinarian will check your dog's liver enzyme levels regularly while taking this medication. Dogs with pre-existing liver or kidney problems should not take EtoGesic.
Dry Eyes
Another side effect associated with EtoGesic is dry eyes, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca. According to VeterinaryPartner.com, the dry eyes result from a lack of tear production, although the cause has not been found. In some dogs, the cessation of tear production is permanent. The longer your dog is on EtoGesic, the less likely he will recover tear production if this side effect occurs.
Allergic Reactions
As with humans, dogs can be allergic to some medications. When giving EtoGesic to a dog, pet owners should look for signs of an allergic reaction. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, symptoms include swelling of the face, a skin rash with intense itching and scratching. EtoGesic should be taken as prescribed by the veterinarian and not be given to any animal but the dog it was prescribed for. Call the vet immediately if your dog experiences any symptoms of allergy.
