Oatmeal provides your body with complex carbohydrates for lasting energy and fiber to promote healthy digestion. Substituting processed carbohydrates and simple sugars with whole grains, such as oatmeal, can help prevent diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and obesity. According to the American Council on Exercise, most Americans, even athletes, consume more protein than the daily recommended allowance, but if your protein intake is too low, adding protein powder to your morning bowl of oats can help.

Step 1

Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan. Slowly stir in steel-cut oats once the water comes to a rolling boil. Steel-cut oats take a bit longer to prepare than traditional oatmeal, but give a more chewy texture without turning mushy.

Step 2

Reduce heat, and allow the oatmeal to simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once your oatmeal reaches a consistency you like, turn off the heat and transfer to a bowl.

Step 3

Stir in a scoop of protein powder. Add a couple spoonfuls of water if the powder and oatmeal mixture becomes too dry.

Step 4

Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top of oatmeal prepared with vanilla protein powder. Cinnamon may help lower blood sugar and cholesterol, while adding calorie-free flavor to your oats.

Step 5

Maximize the nutrition of your protein oatmeal by adding in a 1/4 cup fresh or frozen berries. Berries are rich in antioxidants and add a natural sweetness to your meal. Raspberries or strawberries pair well with chocolate protein powder, while blueberries complement the flavor of vanilla protein powder.

Tips and Warnings

  • Prepare instant oatmeal according to package directions before adding protein powder for a meal on the go. Combine protein powder, dry oatmeal and milk or water in a blender for a drinkable breakfast.
  • Excess protein in your system is stored as fat in your body. Taking too many protein supplements can lead to dehydration and loss of calcium through the urine.

  • 2 cups water
  • Medium saucepan
