Chantix, also known by the generic name varenicline, is an oral medication that is prescribed to help people stop smoking. According to a study published in the journal "Pharmacoeconomics," authored by Gillian M. Keating and Katherine A. Lyseng-Williamson, Chantix works by reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings for cigarettes, as well as blocking the pleasurable and reinforcing effects of smoking. The course of treatment usually lasts for 12 weeks while the individual is actively quitting smoking, with a possible additional 12 weeks to aid in maintenance.

Skin Problems

One possible effect of Chantix therapy is skin reactions. Symptoms include include redness, peeling, rash and swelling. Blisters in the mouth or on the skin that are peeling require medical attention immediately, according to Pfizer, the maker of Chantix.

Gastrointestinal Issues

Approximately 30 percent of users experienced constipation, gas, nausea or vomiting. According to the "Pharmacoeconomics" study by Gillian M. Keating and Katherine A. Lyseng-Williamson, nausea was the most reported symptom, but diminished over time.

Sleep Disturbance

Sleep problems are another of the most commonly reported side effects, according to Pfizer. Disturbances may include dreams that are strange, vivid or unusual or simply trouble sleeping.

Psychiatric Symptoms

Changes in behavior while taking Chantix have been reported. These behavioral changes included agitation, hostility, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions. These symptoms began at different times during the treatment for different people, so it is unclear whether the Chantix itself caused the symptoms, or if the symptoms were related to the act of quitting smoking.
