As you age, your skin thins out, making under eye circles more obvious and opening the door for wrinkles and other signs of aging. Genetics also plays a part, so you should keep that in mind to know how much you can improve the look of under-eye circles and wrinkles without resorting to more invasive methods such as surgery.

Step 1

Keep the area hydrated. Dry skin shows wrinkles more prominently, so make sure you apply a rich facial cream before your makeup. You can also try creams containing retinoids, such as Retin-A or Renova, which are available with a prescription only. These can irritate your skin but provide better results than over-the-counter products.

Step 2

Try a home remedy. Mixing tomato and lemon juice and applying the liquid under your eyes can help you lighten the skin and might help with under-eye circles. Be careful not to touch your eyes with the mix or it will burn.

Step 3

Talk to your doctor about Botox or injectable fillers if more natural remedies don't help. According to The Patient's Guide, Botox is best for dealing with wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Fillers are best for deep lines or for are sometimes used to fill in the hollowing under the eyes, which shows up in the form of under-eye circles, according to Real Self.

Step 4

Ask about laser treatment. Laser resurfacing promotes the formation of collagen and smoother and tighter skin. Your doctor can use laser to treat wrinkles around the eyes and to promote the formation of collagen under your eyes. This might help improve the appearance of dark circles and thicken the skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, thin skin can let vessels under the skin show more clearly, accentuating the darkness of the circles.

Tips and Warnings

  • Taking good care of your eyes can help prevent the formation of new wrinkles and soften the ones already present. Wear sunglasses so you don't squint and always apply sunscreen before going outside. Also try sleeping more because lack of sleep can make your skin look paler and accentuate dark circles.
