Obagi is a cosmetics company that markets and produces products intended to treat and improve skin-related conditions such as scars, photo damage, acne spots, wrinkles and other imperfections. Obagi claims it heals and promotes skincare by regenerating, lightening and resurfacing the skin. As a result, use of Obagi system products may result in undesired side effects. Sensitivity

According to Obagi.com, an increase in sensitivity is a side effect of the Obagi system. Symptoms experiences by users include redness, itchiness, severe peeling and burning upon the application area. The Obagi system contains tretinoin and hydroquinone, chemicals that commonly produce sensitivity side effects. These chemicals may cause eye reddening if used around around the eyes on a regular basis. Obagi users should spot test the cream on skin to different areas to check for sensitivity reactions.

Allergic Reaction

The Obagi skincare system contains sodium metabisulfite, a chemical agent which may cause allergic reactions in some users. People who are susceptible to sulfite allergies may experience skin reactions such as hives, itching, rashes and other irritations. More serious sodibum metabisulfite allergic reactions include anaphylaxis, wheezing and severe asthma attacks. Obagi users who exhibit these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Sunburn

Obagi uses Retin-A and hydroquinone to rid skin of freckles, marks and acne. As a result of this process, the treated skin will be more susceptible to sun rays and damage. In addition, Retin-A increases sun sensitivity and irritation. Sunscreen should be included in all treatment plans when using the Obagi system, according to Obagi.com. Obagi products such as Obagi fader are bleaching agents and should not be used to protect skin against sunburn. Obagi system users should use sunscreen according to their skin type and SPF rating.
