How to Increase Lung Capacity for Cycling

There are techniques for athletes, such as cyclists, to increase the amount of air drawn into the lungs. There is little doubt that increasing the oxygen transported through the blood to the cells will probably enhance performance, according to the website Cycling Performance Tips. When an athlete needs to slow down to breathe, it will ultimately cost time when trying to reach the finish line. Even through breathing is an autonomic response, or something you will do whether you think about it or not, practicing will enhance musculature and improve your lung capacity.

Step 1

Practice blowing out from your lungs completely. Cycling Performance Tips recommends a three to two count for breathing. In other words, inhaling takes two counts and exhaling three. This allows you to fully expel the air from your lungs and improve deep breathing. Use your pedal movements as your ride your bike to count. For example, count the up-and-down movement of your feet while you pedal. As your feet change positioning, count one.

Step 2

Push your diaphragm out as you exhale. Stand with your back straight and your shoulders pushed back. Position one hand in the center of your chest and then move it down so it rests at the top of your stomach. Exhale as fully as possible. You should feel the muscles under your hand pull inward towards your back. Inhale and feel the muscles push against your hand. Push your belly against your hand farther with each inhalation to stretch those muscles.

Step 3

Ride your bike and practice widening the space between your hands while grasp the handlebars. Cycling Performance Tips reports widening your hand positioning as little as 2 cm will give your chest more space to expand and improve your lung capacity.
