There are several things to consider before you hang a punching bag in your room. You must have ample room for the punching bag as well as the distance it will swing in all directions. The punching bag must be supported from a very sturdy rack or beam. All this equipment is heavy. The floor beneath a punching bag must be strong, especially if the punching bag is hanging from a weighted rack.
Step 1
Pick the right spot. Once you hang a punching bag, it will be difficult to move. It is therefore important to put it where you want to keep it. Make sure that there is plenty of room to swing the bag around when you punch it. Also make sure that it will be out of the way when you are not using it.
Step 2
Choose your support system. A strong beam provides the best support for a punching bag. This must be an exposed main support beam that is built to hold up thousands of pounds. Do not attempt to hang a punching bag from a simple 2x4 beam. A specially built punching bag rack is also acceptable. These require weight plates on the base to keep the rack from moving. Use at least 200 pounds of weight for a 50 pound punching bag.
Step 3
Connect a strong chain to the support structure. If you are using a support beam, wrap the chain around it at least once so it wont slide. Twice is even better. Let both ends of the chain hang down toward the floor. If you are using a punching bag rack, connect the chain to the "S" shaped hook at the end.
Step 4
Modify the length of the chain to accommodate the height of the punching bag. If you are using it for boxing, hang the punching bag so that you are hitting the middle or slightly higher. If you are using it for martial arts, hang the punching bag so it drops to knee level. This way you can also kick the bag. You will need to measure the punching bag and height of your support to determine the proper length of the chain.
Step 5
Hang the punching bag on the chain. Lift it up on a sturdy chair or table that is higher than the level where it will hang. Get up on a ladder and connect the punching bag to the hanging chain. Push the punching bag off of the chair or table. Check that the support structure is stable and that the punching bag swings freely.
