Sebum, the oily secretion produced by the sebaceous glands, keeps the skin moist and supple. Whiteheads occur when the glands become overactive and the pores become clogged with sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells, according to Brown University Health Education. As the pore becomes engorged, it enlarges, forming a small white bump on the surface of the skin. Although there is no instant cure, regular care will help to keep whiteheads under control. Talk to your physician or dermatologist if at-home treatments and over-the-counter remedies don't improve your whitehead problem.
Step 1
Wash your face twice every day, using a medicated acne soap or a mild, non-detergent soap, suggests Harvard University Health Services. Scrub gently, as rubbing will inflame the skin and make acne and whiteheads worse. Avoid washing your face more than twice daily.
Step 2
Apply an over-the-counter medication twice every day, advises the University of California Health System. Medications containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, available in lotions, creams and gels, can be helpful as they will promote shedding of dead, dry skin cells. The products also help to prevent the development of bacteria that contributes to whiteheads.
Step 3
Use an exfoliating scrub once a week to slough off old skin, remove existing whiteheads and prevent the formation of new ones. Look for a gentle product formulated especially for acne or irritated skin. Avoid using the scrub if your skin is irritated or inflamed.
Step 4
Use makeup, moisturizers, toners and other skin care products that won't clog your pores. Look for labels that indicate the product is non-comedogenic. Remove makeup every night using a gentle, non-oily makeup remover.
Tips and Warnings
- Never attempt to squeeze or pick whiteheads, as doing so can cause inflammation, infection and scarring. Avoid the use of needles or blackhead extracting tools, which will only make skin problems worse.
