Generally, a strictly liquid diet is best done under direct supervision of a physician. If you are in excellent health, however, you might consider a day or two of a liquid diet to help cleanse. If you have any health issues, though, get medical clearance first.
Take into consideration when you decide to undergo your very short-term liquid diet: determine if you can really rest and not overexert. It is probably not realistic to maintain a heavy work, school or exercise schedule while on a liquid diet.
Juice Fasting
Juice fasting has been done for as long as human history. Use fresh organic fruits and vegetables of all kinds and press through a juicer. Consume at least six, 8-oz glasses of juice throughout the day and night to replace what would normally be your solid food meals. By doing so, you will be able to consume a minimum of 1,200 calories.
Drink another eight, 8-oz of water, as recommended by the American Cancer Society, as a baseline for good hydration. As you are not getting fiber, drink a cup or two of senna, cascara sagrada, triphala or buckthorn root to keep your bowel clear.
Drink Vegetable Broth
Prepare clear vegetable broth. This does not provide many calories, so for most people, this might be a liquid diet you do for half a day to a full day. Roughly chop all types of vegetables: Idaho potatoes, turnips, carrots, broccoli, beets, kale and chard and simmer at low heat for at least an hour. Strain and sip. Consume at least six cups throughout the day.
Add bitter melon, burdock root or chopped watercress for blood cleansing effects. Again, drink at least another eight, 8-oz glasses of water and an herbal laxative tea to stay regular.
Add Blender Drinks
Expand your menu to include dairy foods for blender drinks. For example, to sustain a liquid diet for four to seven days, with your doctor's approval, add fruit smoothies. Blend yogurt, cottage cheese or yogurt with bananas, papaya, strawberries, blueberries and other fruits. This will produce a high-protein drink that can contain as much as 300 to 400 calories. Adding a protein powder can boost the nutrition by adding vitamins and minerals. Select mixed protein powders made from egg, pea and brown rice protein. Not everyone can digest soy protein powder.
Were you to drink a smoothie for breakfast, fresh vegetable and fruit juices through mid-day and vegetable broth at night, you will be able to consume at least 1,200 calories per day.
The National Institutes of Health recommends people not remain on very low calorie diets for very long unless under medical supervision.
