The benefits of olive oil reach beyond its frequent use in Mediterranean cooking. Olive oil can be used to moisturize and nourish the hair, according to the Daily Green. It contains linoleic acid, which helps to lock water in and keep your locks lustrous and radiant. It also helps frizzy and damaged hair come back to balance. To use olive oil to help promote hair growth, add some drops of essential oils which can stimulate hair follicles. Note that if you are experiencing unusual hair or sudden hair loss, you may want to consult your doctor. Natural and herbal supplements are not meant to replace medical treatment.
Step 1
Pour approximately 8 oz of olive oil into a glass container.
Step 2
Add 15 to 20 drops of rosemary essential oil to olive oil, which is said to stimulate hair growth. Continue to add five to 10 drops of lavender essential oil, which provides nourishment for the hair.
Step 3
Close the glass container and lightly roll it back and forth on a hard surface. Do not shake the container as its best to let the oils roll to mix.
Step 4
Apply the oil mixture to the roots of your hair, deeply massaging it into your scalp. Comb it throughout your hair with your hands down to your ends.
Step 5
Wrap your hair on the top of our head and put on a shower cap. Let it sit on your hair for 25 minutes.
Step 6
Run a hot shower and get in with the cap still on your head. Let it "steam" your hair to open up your hair follicles for five minutes. Rinse your hair with your favorite shampoo and conditioner.
Tips and Warnings
- Be sure to purchase organic extra virgin olive oil, which is more pure in form and also helps the environment. The Herb Companion also suggests using the herbs horsetail and nettles to bring circulation to the scalp. Women may also try licorice or Siberian ginseng to help with thinning hair. You can consume those herbs in a tea or tincture form. Also look for herbal shampoo formulas that contain those herbs. You can also use olive oil to moisturize your body along or as a healthy lubricant for a close shave.
- With essential oils it is important to always use a carrier oil, such as olive oil. Essential oils are too potent to be used on their own. Be careful not to touch the rims of the bottles or apply them directly onto your skin. Again, if you are concerned about hair loss, you may want to contact your doctor.
