Whether you work in an office, out on a construction site or you stay home with the kids, it's perfectly normal to feel that afternoon slump. You may even begin to doze off and forget about the important task you had to get done. Rather than relying on a shot of caffeine -- which can end up making you feel more sluggish than before when it's worn off -- try a few rejuvenating tricks.

Work in a Workout

If you know you regularly hit the wall at a certain time of the day, shift around your schedule so you can fit in a quick workout. Whether you head to the gym or just strap on your running shoes and take a jog around the block, a quick, vigorous workout releases endorphins that can make you feel awake and happy, according to MayoClinic.com.

Have a Healthful Snack

That sluggish feeling just might be your metabolism slowing down because of hunger. If you've been running around all day with little to eat, try a healthful, balanced snack with complex carbohydrates and protein. For example, a crispy apple dipped in a dollop of peanut butter gives you natural sugars as well as healthful fats and proteins, giving you the energy you need to get through your day. Whole grain crackers topped with lean lunch meat and low-fat cheese will do the trick as well.

Laugh it Up

Look up a funny video on the Internet. Talk to your hilarious co-worker. Take a break and watch your favorite sitcom. Whatever it is, getting a few laughs in is another effective way to release endorphins into your brain, which can help you feel more alert and energized.

Take a Catnap

Catch a quick nap in the middle of your day, if possible. Even 15 to 30 minutes can have a big effect on your overall energy level and alertness. Put in earplugs, draw the shades and set a loud alarm during the middle of the day to make sure you get some uninterrupted sleep.
