Vollleyball is a poplular recreational and competitive sport played throughout the world. When it is played recreationally, court size and net measurements are random, often dependent on the age and ability level of the participants. However, when played at the competitive level there are specific net height and court size measurements that must be followed.
Mens' net
Men and women compete in volleyball with the net at different heights. The official height of the net for mens' competition is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches. The net is about 1 meter wide and between 9.5 meters and 10 meters long.
Womens' net
The official height of the net for womens' volleyball is 7 foot 4 1/8 inches. The net remains about 1 meter wide and between 9.5 meters and 10 meters long.
Court size
The court is about about 9 meters (29 feet 6 inches) wide by 18 meters (59 feet) for both men and women. The outside boundaries are made with lines that are 5 mm thick. Any ball that hits any part of the line is considered in bounds.
Antennas
There are antennas on the top of both sides of the net. These antennas emit a beeping sound when a serve hits the net. That lets the judge know that a serve needs to be played over if it has gone over the net. The antenna also let the judge know that a player has touched the net during the course of a point and that loses the point for the offending team.
Supporting posts
The net is to be held up with supporting posts that are both outside the field of play. The posts need to be smooth and round so they will not cause injury if a player happens to run into one of them. The post needs to be about about 1 meter (no less than .5 meter) outside the court.
