Volleyball is both a fun and enjoyable recreational sport and one of the most competitive games when played on the intercollegiate, professional or Olympic stage. The game gained great popularity in the 1984 Olympics when the U.S. mens' team won gold and the womens' team took silver.
The mens' game
The net in the mens' game 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches. The net is about 3 feet 4 inches wide and 30 to 33 feet long depending on the court. The top of the net has antennas on it and the posts for the nets are outside the playing court.
The womens' game
The net in the womens' game 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches. The net is about 3 feet 4 inches wide and 30 to 33 feet long depending on the court. The top of the net has antennas on it and the posts for the nets are outside the playing court.
Length of the court
The court is 9 meters wide by 18 meters long for both the mens' and womens' game. The court is divided in half with the net serving as the divider.
The antennas
There are two antennas on top of either side of the net. They are there for two purposes. If a serve ticks off the top of the net and goes over, it signals the referee in charge of the match and lets him know that the ball did not go over the net cleanly and that the ball needs to be served again. It also lets the judge know if any of the players have made contact with the net, which immediately gives the opposite team the point.
The posts
The posts are outside the court by at least 12 inches. The posts are outside the area of play. They have to be rounded to protect the players from injury.
