Lacrosse is a very competitive and physical game that demands strength, speed and conditioning in order to be a top player. Lacrosse is not a major sport, but it is similar to hockey in that you must physically compete for every inch of space on the field against an opponent who can use his body to keep you from gaining that piece of real estate. Lacrosse sticks
There are three different types of lacrosse sticks used in the sport. There are short sticks -- 30 to 42 inches long -- that are used by midfielders and attack men. There are four players who use longer sticks -- 52 to 72 inches -- to play defense. The goaltender has a stick that is 40 to 72 inches long. Very few goaltenders opt for the maximum length stick because the position demands quick moves to stop shots.
Gloves
Lacrosse players must wear padded gloves in order to protect their hands from heavy defensive blows from their opponents. While the goal of your opponent is to deflect a shot or pass when you have the lacrosse ball, the result is often a slash or shot across the hands. Lacrosses gloves are quite similar to the ones worn by hockey players.
Arm pads
Much like gloves, lacrosse players have to wear significant padding across their upper arms and forearms. The defensive motion of most lacrosse players often results in a blow on the arms of the offensive player and that demands that strong and relatively light pads must be worn during the competition.
Shoulder pads
In addition to protecting the wearer from the sticks of their opponents, shoulder pads give players the peace of mind and freedom to go into the offensive zone and make a tough play. Offensive players have to fight for every inch of real estate they can get and the shoulder pad is of great importance because it allows the player to get low and deliver a shot before moving in on goal and trying to score.
Helmets
The lacrosse helmet is light and strong and it has a facemask. Playing the game without a facemask would be a very dangerous chores. Lacrosse sticks are often waved at head and shoulder height and shots to the head happen with regularithy. These hard plastic helmets protect the wearer and allow him to play without fear.
