Muscles Used in Competitive Swimming

Abdominals

The abdominal muscles are used with every stroke and kick you take while swimming competitively. As you pull water with your arms, your abdominal muscles are constantly working. Your lower abs also get a workout as you kick with your extended feet.

Biceps and triceps

As you pull the water with your arms, both your biceps and triceps are being extended and working forcefully forcefully.Your biceps do most of the work as your bring your arms out in front of you through the air and your triceps to most of the work as you pull the water back to propel yourself.

Gluteals, hamstrings and quadriceps

Obviously, the muscles in the lower half of your body get a powerful workout when swimming competitively. The gluteal muscles, located in the buttocks, are working constantly during the kicking process. The hamstrings also get pushed hard while kicking and get an extra workout when asked to propel a turn by kicking off the wall to turn. The quadriceps do most of the work when getting the feet to kick quickly and provide speed during the swimming race.
