Choosing the proper diet and exercise program for yourself is a daunting task. One key to making a lasting change in your life is to choose a program that will allow you to make lifestyle choices that you can maintain. Spending a little time researching different programs and speaking with your physician will help you to make the best choice possible.

P90X

This workout and diet program is not for the faint of heart. The program's effectiveness comes from changing the exercises that are done and not allowing your muscles to become accustomed to a particular workout. The exercise component of P90X is a strenuous one and consists of 12 different workouts. These workouts range from push-ups and pull-ups to yoga and even martial arts. They last anywhere from 60 to 95 minutes a day and can be done in your own living room with very little expense. The workouts are difficult but you are urged to take things at your own pace. Nutritionally, this program consists of a three-phase plan that coincides with changes in the workouts and concentrates on a well-balanced diet of low-fat foods. Any low-fat food is allowed. Frequent meals and/or snacks are encouraged in this nutrition plan.

Body for Life

The Body for Life program has been a tool of lifestyle change for thousands of people. The diet plan calls for six meals and/or snacks a day. There is no calorie counting on this plan; instead, you simply limit your carbohydrates throughout the day to only one meal. The goal of this one meal each day is to eat equal portion sizes of carbohydrates, proteins, and vegetables. Body for Life also builds in a cheat day each week. On this day you can eat whatever you desire. The exercise portion of this plan calls for 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three times per week and a 45-minute weight-lifting session three times per week.

The Abs Diet

As the name suggests, the Abs Diet concentrates on the abdominal area and claims to offer noticeable results in six weeks. The diet plan emphasizes the consumption of 12 power foods in every meal and the avoidance of foods that are high in saturated fat. There is also a focus on whole grains, berries and green vegetables. This diet plan does not include pills or supplements of any kind. The exercise program is heavy on abdominal exercises in addition to the strength and cardiovascular components. The Abs Diet workout plan emphasizes moving quickly between exercises and using exercises that target multiple muscle groups instead of individual muscles. This plan as designed is meant mainly for men; however, there is a separate version for women.
