The Correct Way to Grip a Golf Club

Gripping a golf club correctly is the first step towards building a consistent swing. Learning how to hold the club correctly is not easy. It amy not feel comfortable at first and it will take some getting used to. However, once the golfer adopts the correct grip, it will make a signficant difference on the way he plays the game.

Step 1

Hold the top of the club in your right hand. Now let your left hand hang down naturally. Take hold of the club with your left hand. Give your left hand a 1/4 turn to its left. Slide your left hand up to the top of the shaft and let go with your right hand.

Step 2

Put your right hand directly underneath your left hand. Take the small finger of your right hand and put it between the forefinger and middle finger of your left hand. Make sure both thumbs align down the shaft of the club.

Step 3

Grip the club firmly, as if you were shaking hands at a business meeting. The grip should be a "5" on a scale of a 1 to 10. You don't want to squeeze it any tighter because you will restrict your swing. Any less firm and the club head will not remain in place when it makes contact with the ball.

Step 4

Check the strength of your grip by picking up a medium-lenth blade of grass. Put the blade of grass under the fleshy part of your left hand, next to the thumb. Put the other end of the blade of grass at the top of your right hand. Now swing the club. If the blade of grass remains in your hands, you have the correct grip pressure. If it falls out of your hands, you are not gripping the club tightly enough.

Step 5

Practice your grip when you go to the driving range. Don't be in a hurry to hit too many balls too quickly. It is more important that you do it with the correct grip. Check it every time you swing the club.
